England wait on Ballance bulletin before deciding on changes

England wait on Ballance bulletin before deciding on changes”

Ballance is now a doubt for that next Test with South Africa at The Oval but England will be hoping the 27-year-old can recover in time for the match that starts on July 27.

Bayliss was critical of his team after their alarming 340-run defeat against South Africa, describing the performance as a "shocker" in Joe Root's second game as Test captain.

"In terms of fitness he came through quite well, so hopefully he's fit for selection for the next one".

If, as expected, Ballance is ruled out, Surrey's Stoneman is likely to open alongside former captain Alastair Cook, with Keaton Jennings, who was out for a duck in the first innings and made just three in his second knock, set to drop down to number three.

"They probably started off well and have then fallen away a little. So that's a concern, obviously". "The way they've gone about things in practice and the runs they've scored in county cricket have been outstanding and now it's just about doing it in worldwide cricket".

"I'm sure if they get the opportunity to do that in the next game they will go on and make big scores".

"Keaton, for example, at the top of the order - if we're consistent with our selections - should get some more chances".

"The last selection meeting we had before this series started, players like Stoneman and Westley were spoken about at length", said Bayliss.

Bayliss told Standard Sport: "Since Andrew Strauss retired [in 2012], all the guys at the top of the order have been picked because they've done well in county cricket". "There is also Haseeb Hameed (who played three Tests against India last winter) but he is a little out of form for Lancashire this year".

Fast bowler Mark Wood, who missed much of the 2016 England season through injury, is also a doubt for the Oval with a heel problem.

Cricket Ireland announced that his departure will take place in December, after a "mutual decision was reached on his position".
