Flash Flood In Arizona - July 2017”

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office sent a ground team of eight people as well as 4 K-9 units to help in the search.

In a wildfire area, the scorched land repels water, making flooding worse.

Additional crews from around Arizona are expected to join in the search for a 27-year-old man still missing after a flash flood in central Arizona.

There still is hope Garnica would be found alive, he said.

"We had no idea how fast and big it was going to be", Muller said.

The search was suspended Monday afternoon because of thunderstorms moving into the Tonto National Forest area. She and their three children were among the nine dead. Raya's mother, Maribel, also died along with her grandson.

Other areas at high risk for flash flooding include locations near the steep slopes of Mount Elden and the San Francisco Peaks, any of the dry washes around the Sedona area, the slot canyons around Lake Powell, Moenkopi Wash between Tuba City and Keams Canyon and Bright Angel Creek in the Grand Canyon, Klimowski said.

The group went up the mountain early Saturday, said Tom Price, the general manager at The Horny Toad, a restaurant where Hector Garnica worked.

There, Muller said, they saw a couple with two young children playing in the placid river and told them to get out because the river would soon become a monster.

Hartounian reported from Phoenix. "Literally 20 seconds later you just see like hundreds of gallons of water smacking down and debris and trees getting pulled in". According to the list, Raya's husband and 27-year-old Hector Miguel Garnica were missing.

Hornung has been Gila County Sheriff's Office more than a decade, and he said he's never seen a flash-flood tragedy on this scale. "It would have been at least 45 minutes to an hour before assistance would have got here", he said. "It's later that we have our moments", he said.

The man's wife clung on to branches nearby.

"I just heard my boyfriend's dad say, 'Hey, look". Crews were searching the area for Garnica, the only person who remains missing.

At least nine people, including five children, have been killed by a flash flood at a national forest in the USA state of Arizona.

The trip turned deadly when Garnica's wife, Maria Garnica, and their three children, Danny, 7, Mia, 5, and Emily, 3, were carried away and killed in the flood.

The victims had been lounging Saturday in the Water Wheel swimming hole, where the river narrows and rocks create pools and a series of small waterfalls.

Five bodies were recovered from the river on Sunday, a day after the floods. He didn't have updated numbers of missing but said the state would take over the search operation on Monday.

Authorities haven't identified those who died in the floodwaters. But officials warn that visitors need to be aware of the dangers of a flash flood. The severe thunderstorm was located in a remote area that had been burned by a recent wildfire, Water Wheel Fire and Medical District Fire Chief Ron Sattelmaier said.
