Van stolen with elderly, disabled man believed to be inside, police say

Diaz, who has an amputated leg, was in the 2000 Dodge Voyager van stolen from 613 Laisey Drive near East Volusia Avenue around 3 p.m., police said.

Police believed 71-year-old Ruben Melendez Diaz was inside the vehicle when it was stolen.

An elderly, disabled man reported missing Monday afternoon has been found, DeLand officials said.

The family was expected to travel to Daytona Beach to meet Diaz and pick up the van.

It appeared that Diaz drove himself to the restaurant, investigators said.

"Right now, our biggest concern is his safety", DeLand police spokesman Chris Graham had said earlier in the evening. Diaz had his leg amputated and was last seen wearing a green shirt and tan trousers.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement issued a Silver Alert for Diaz, which is likely no longer in effect.
