Google launches new security features to protect users from unverified apps”

So on Tuesday, the company released new security protections. If you're a developer, make sure the appropriate accounts are granted either the Project Owner or Billing Account Admin IAM role in the Google Cloud Console and that the OAuth Consent Screen configuration is correct in API Manager. Additionally, Apps Script users will also see new cautionary language reminding them to "consider whether you trust" an application before granting OAuth access, as well as a banner identifying web pages and forms created by other users. Any Google Chrome user landing on a hacked or malicious website will recognize the prompt as the red warning screen.

In May, the widespread phishing attack pretended to be Google Docs.

Google now displays an error page when users and developers try to access unverified web apps. That way you won't give an unverified app the ability to manage your email, for example, only to be told a second later that the app is unverified.

Google is beefing up security following the major Docs phishing scam in May. That would be silly.

"We're committed to fostering a healthy ecosystem for both users and developers", the company writes in today's announcement.

Google is bringing the same kind of protections to Apps Scripts, too.

The Mountain View tech giant will even make you type "continue" to proceed from this screen, making even the most careless users pay attention."These new notices will inform users automatically if they may be at risk, enabling them to make informed decisions to keep their information safe, and will make it easier to test and develop apps for developers", Google said. For existing apps, Google is recommending that developers verify their contact information is up to date because the company will getting in touch in the coming months. Google isn't just subjecting newbies to more scrutiny-it will do the same for established apps by requiring "developers of some current apps" to go through the verification process.

The first two features announced today-the verification warning screen and changes to Apps Script-are rolling out now.

This new screen will appear for apps that use Google's OAuth implementation for accessing your data and that come from developers who haven't gone through Google's verification process yet.
