Karen Bradley still 'minded' to refer Fox/Sky merger to CMA”

Bradley said last month she meant to refer the $15-billion deal for deeper investigation after she rejected proposals by Murdoch's Twenty-First Century Fox to ensure the independence of Sky's news service.

Bradley also confirmed that she will write to all parties involved in the process as well as the Labour opposition, House of Commons Speaker John Bercow and others if she makes a final decision during the summer recess.

Fox executive chairman Lachlan and chief executive James said the deal was one of the biggest investments in Britain since the country voted to leave the European Union previous year.

As one of the first, and the most significant investment to be proposed following last year's referendum on exiting the European Union, our proposed transaction will be carefully scrutinised by others keen to gauge the government's commitment to creating a climate conducive to investment, or in the words of the Prime Minister and several of your fellow ministers, "open for business".

She said she still has media plurality concerns is not anxious about "commitment to broadcasting standards".

According to Bradley, she remains minded to refer elements of the deal concerning media plurality to British competition authorities. To be clear, as I have said, I must fully consider all relevant representations before reaching a final decision.

Rupert Murdoch will have to wait a few more weeks to find out whether his bid for control of Sky will be the subject of an in-depth competition probe.

Mr Murdoch already owns 39% of the satellite broadcaster.
