Timberwolves working on Andrew Wiggins extension

Timberwolves working on Andrew Wiggins extension”

Now the organization turns their attention to locking up one of the cornerstones of the franchise long-term.

According to ESPN.com, the Minnesota Timberwolves and guard Andrew Wiggins are actively involved in contract negotiations on a five-year extension worth almost $148 million.

"We're working on it right now", team president Tom Thibodeau said at an introductory press conference for Jamal Crawford. Wiggins was only a 10th-round value in standard leagues last season due to a lack of peripheral stats, but he's still only 22 and is just scratching the surface of his potential.

The former University of Kansas guard is locked up through the 2018-19 season, and the extension is for five years worth some $148 million, ESPN reported.

The 22-year-old Wiggins has increased his scoring average in each of his three seasons in the National Basketball Association, since being the first overall selection in the 2014 National Basketball Association draft.

While notably upping the ante along the way, he first averaged 16.9 points per game as a rookie in 2014-15 before pouring in 20.7 points per game in 2015-16. Again adding to his résumé in 2016-17, Wiggins most recently averaging a single-season career-high 23.6 points per contest.
