Man shot in arm, suspect shoots himself following Spanish Fork High altercation”

According to a press release from Lt. Matt Johnson with the Spanish Fork Police Department, police officers were dispatched at 2:22 the north parking lot at Spanish Fork High School on reports of an 18-year-old with a gunshot wound. When the 19-year-old man arrived at the school in the passenger seat of a vehicle, the 18-year-old walked up to the door and told him to get out of the auto, Johnson said.

The victim tried to take the gun from him and was shot in the arm during the struggle.

Officers said the victim and other witnesses ran when the shooter fired three to five shots in the air and also shot at a witness.

That's when the 19-year-old brandished a handgun, he said.

The shooter eventually fled in a vehicle driven by a woman to a Spanish Fork residence, where police said the suspect swapped cars and then drove away with a man. Johnson says a group of adults and juveniles were there and when the 19-year-old arrived, he pulled out a gun and shot the 18-year-old in the arm before fleeing.

Matt Johnson told Gephardt Daily trouble started when an 18-year-old male was exchanging words with the 19-year-old passenger of a auto who then pointed a pistol at the teen.

Two hours later, police in Payson spotted what they thought was the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.

As officers were preparing to approach the vehicle and man jumped from the passenger's side and shot himself in the head.

Police have chosen to not release the identities of those involved in the shooting at this time. Johnson said the county attorney will review the case to determine whether either of the two drivers should face criminal charges.
