Commissioner backs Shropshire police over crime rise

Commissioner backs Shropshire police over crime rise”

The police recorded almost 5 million offences in the 12 months up to March 2017 - a 10 per cent increase from the previous year.

John Campion said the figures, which also showed a sharp rise in the number of violent offences being dealt with by police, were in line with the national figure, and that the public should be assured that the police were working hard to protect the public.

There was also a large rise in the assault without injury category that includes modern slavery, which rose by 1,385 offences, and stalking, up 1,135 crimes. But the capital's crime problems were highlighted by big rises in risky offences including knife crime and robbery.

But this latest set of official crime police figures show that this is no longer necessarily true.

The Office for National Statistics crime survey figures, published on Thursday (July 20) show the total number of crimes reported to and recorded by the police rose by 10pc between April 2016 and March 2017 to nearly five million.

There were 723 homicides over the year, including murder, manslaughter, and infanticide cases.

The use of handguns in firearms offences has risen 24%, the ONS said.

A multi-agency group has been set up to examine the reasons for the increase and DCC Vaughan said the group will report its findings later in the year. They do not include fraud offences, which are recorded separately.

Deputy Chief Constable James Vaughan said he believes some of the increase may be due to increased confidence in the police, with more people coming forward.

Responding to the figures, Police Federation of England and Wales chairman Steve White asked: "What more of a wake-up call does the Government need?"

Some 35,000 households are questioned for the CSEW and the response rate is 73%.

ONS said the likelihood of being a victim of crime (excluding fraud and computer misuse) has fallen considerably over time. "The ONS do say that the more reliable of the two measures is the British Crime Survey".

"We recognise that crime is changing and we are determined to get ahead of emerging threats to the safety and security of our families and communities, " Hurd said.

Today's London figures also show a 12 per cent rise in robberies, a 10 per cent increase in sex offences and a four per cent growth in overall "violence against the person" offences. "From my own experiences they make mistakes and police in the past had a better relationship with the public". She was able to confound warnings of "Christmas for Criminals" despite cutting police budgets by 18% and overseeing an 19,000 reduction in police officer numbers because for her five years in charge the crime rate went in one direction only - down.
