Dunkirk brings in $5.5 million in Thursday previews”

He also heard of a soldier, "an ordinary working-class man", who happened upon a restaurant and ordered Champagne - something he'd never had before - "and absolutely loved it".

The movie revolves around 1940's notorious Operation Dynamo in which almost 300,000 soldiers were successfully rescued from the Dunkirk harbour in France as they were invaded by Nazis. 400,000 soldiers trapped on a French beach in the early days of the war. War is one of the hardest topics to tackle artistically, and by the way of Dunkirk, Nolan shows us just what a master film-maker he is.

Nolan's Dunkirk absolutely translates the oppressive, relentless horror of that "darkest hour" to the big screen. Do we take an injured man on a stretcher, or use the space he'd take up for men who are still standing?

What follows is as brutal as history demands it to be. In the sky, RAF pilots Farrier (Tom Hardy) and Collins (Jack Lowden) are all that stands between the defenseless soldiers on the beach and German bombs. Nor do the actions of the various viewpoints appear to impact one another. As a result, news cameraman Charles Martin of the news agency Pathé is said to have been the only one documenting the event, and because when he joined in to help with the evacuation there are few photos in general of the operation. At the same time, Dunkirk is populated with character types and story lines that will be familiar to any fan of war movies, and the combination of familiar archetypes with nontraditional storytelling will delight some viewers while pleasing others. Nolan also employed some of the original "Dunkirk little boats" that were used during the rescue. We get perspectives from soldiers, pilots, commanders and civilians.

It's no overstatement to call Dunkirk a masterpiece.

In a world that's growing increasingly averse to traditional means of releasing films, Multiplex and indie cinema bosses can rely on at least one Super Director not to jump ship to Netflix anytime soon: Christopher Nolan.

"You're just plunged straight into this world and you're sort of swept along in it". If I have one complaint about the acting it's that Nolan has attracted such talents as Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and Tom Hardy but has put them in roles that don't require a lot of acting. Let's hope the Academy members' memories are able to reach back this far come awards season - Rylance absolutely deserves recognition. These men - and boys - left behind because they were deemed the wrong age to fight, were absolutely average. The seemingly ever-expanding Big Blue is all they can see ahead of them, despite the homeland, England, being within their reach.

'If the British army had been destroyed or captured at Dunkirk, Britain would nearly certainly have been forced to make peace with Hitler, and the country would have become, as [Winston] Churchill warned, a slave state'.

Watch me discuss all three in my weekly Friday-morning movies segment on WVUE-Fox 8, in which I tell you everything you really need to know about this week's new movies in a neat and tidy three-minute package.

Speaking to Indiewire, Nolan said: 'Netflix has a weird aversion to supporting theatrical films.
