No Atletico in ATK

No Atletico in ATK”

Former England star striker Teddy Sheringham, who was unveiled as the new coach of Indian Super League (ISL) team Atletico de Kolkata on Saturday, accepted his ignorance when quizzed about his knowledge of Indian football. "We continue to be friends", Goenka told a media meet here. "We have with us a competent technical team".

"Speaking upfront, as far as financials are concerned, they have not invested a penny". "So it does not make a difference whether they are there or not". You will see the team as we go along.

"I was told about the football in India and the insane fans". We have not let down our fans over the last three seasons. Amar Tomar Kolkata literally translates to "Mine and Your Kolkata".

He also announced that Atletico Madrid would sell their 25 percent stake in ATK to him. We've grown up watching them, idolising them.

With their experience and expertise, Goenka seems confident that the team is ready to take on the challenge, despite additions of new teams in the league.

Putting to rest the speculation about ATK's association with Spanish club Atletico de Madrid, ATK principal owner Sanjiv Goenka said, "Atletico de Madrid will not be part of ATK".

For Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) there is lots in a name.

However, when asked whether the club was being re-christened after the end of the partnership with the Spanish outfit, Goenka gave a hazy reply.

And would ATK continue to stand for what is was over the past three years?

"Let's finalise Indian players in the draft tomorrow". Then we go for our foreign players. "And we welcome it", he said.

While the short name of the team has remained the same, the context is largely different after the discontinuation of the partnership. "So, it is not better or worse for anyone".

Having failed to make the ISL sticking to their demands, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal will be looking to show their strength in the I-League, in an unofficial war with the ISL franchise. But Goenka said they are not in competition with the Big Two."We don't compete with anyone".
