Space scientist and academician Yash Pal dies at 90”

He has been awarded and honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1976 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2013, i.e., the third and second highest Indian civilian Honours.

Pal made significant contributions to bring reforms in education and in the study of cosmic rays, astrophysics, and high-energy physics, among other things.

Yash Pal was born on November 26, 1926 in British India's Jhang area, now in Pakistan. While the cause of death has not been determined, the 90-year-old was reportedly a cancer survivor and died at his Noida residence in Uttar Pradesh. His last rites will take place at 3 pm this afternoon. Prof. Pal was awarded with Kalinga Prize by UNESCO for his contribution towards popularizing science among masses. He was raised in Pai in Haryana. He got a masters degree from the Panjab University and completed his PhD from MIT in 1958.

When the government chose to set up the Department of Space, Yash Pal was chosen as the first director of the newly set up Space Applications Centre in 1973. He was also the chairman of the University Grants Commission from 1986 to 1991. Pal also served as the Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi from 2007 to 2012. In 1993, he was appointed as the chairman of National Advisory Committee set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. The report of the committee, named as "Learning without Burden", is at present regarded as a seminal document in Indian education.
