Century-old building collapses in Kolkata, several feared trapped”

A portion of an nearly century-old building at 10 Mirror Street, Central Taltala collapsed here this afternoon and a few people are also feared trapped, said a senior police official. "Both were found dead after a preliminary check-up", the officer said.

Two fire engines and a huge team from the fire department along with personnel from Disaster Management units and police are involved in the rescue operation.

Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, present on the spot of investigation, said that the building was being used as a warehouse.

"According to a local report, two people including a teenage girl are feared trapped under the collapsed building. We will prioritise the demolition of any other houses in the city in such fragile condition", he added. "However, how many people are trapped in the wreckage is still not certain". They were later taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. It was not properly maintained as well, fire brigade officials said.
