Girl Scouts add STEM badges

Girl Scouts add STEM badges”

There's nothing quite like a Thin Mint after a long day. I have to say, I'm pretty jealous of anyone who gets to be a Girl Scout today.

"My troop leader looked at me and saw me looking at the stars, and she taught me that there were constellations, she taught me there were systems and patterns to the stars", Acevedo said in a recent interview.

Fortune magazine writer Madeline Farber stated the new badges reflect a growing trend of getting more girls interested in STEM fields earlier. So what kind of badges are they adding?

In a partnership with Code.org, GoldieBlox, the Society of Women Engineers, among others, Girl Scouts of the U.S. on Tuesday announced 23 new badges, 15 of which are science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) related. "They work with technology all the time and we want them to not just be users of technology".

According to the 2009 Census, women make up 24 percent of workers in the STEM industry.

But considering Girl Scouts of the United States of America is 1.8 million girls strong, those statistics could change.

The Girl Scouts announced Tuesday they are adding 23 new badges in STEM and the outdoors to help educate young women in trades and hobbies like robotics and programing as young as kindergarten-age. "It's really what girls need now".

This will be one of the largest additions to the Girl Scouts' collection since their founding in 1912.

To create the lesson plans each girl needs to complete in order to earn herself a badge, the Scouts collaborated with groups like the Society of Women Engineers and the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.

Girl Scouts of Central Maryland watch as Girl Scout badges are manufactured during a tour of the Lion Brothers factory in Owings Mills, Maryland.

"The girls are learning not just how to do a specific skill but also how to think, how to think like an inventor, how to think like a creator, how to think like a maker", said Acevedo. These are things that girls want.
