Governor Cuomo Takes Executive Action To Expand Access To Voter Registration”

Governor Cuomo signed Executive Order #169, which directs every state agency to make available voter registration forms and to offer assistance in filling them out.

Critics of the state's election system point to restrictions on party enrollment and the lack of early voting as some causes of New York's chronically low voter turnout. The task force is charged with executing the state agency voter registration program in conjunction with the State Board of Elections.

It's part of a larger initiative to increase voter registration across the state. Under state and federal law, the forms previously were available at the Department of Motor Vehicles and some social service agencies.

The order also directs public college and university campuses to strengthen their voter registration efforts. "It's the barriers that voters face on Election Day that's the problem".

Prohibiting electronic cigarettes on all school grounds will diminish youth access to electronic cigarettes and help bolster New York's commitment to preventing childhood and teenage smoking.

"One of the biggest deterrents that voters face are long lines on Election Day", said Wilson, who added it would be much easier for voters if they had multiple days to cast their ballot or could do it on their own schedule.

The Task Force will also explore ways to implement the reforms laid out in this Executive Order with the use of electronic signatures and how to set up secure online voting registration systems, similar to the one now in place at the Department of Motor Vehicles, through additional state agencies.

Last year's elections prompted an unprecedented number of complaints.

"It is our responsibility to make it as easy as possible for people to vote because what's what democracy looks like", Cuomo said in a statement. The governor's counsel, David, disagrees with accusations that the governor did not work hard enough to get the bills passed. "He does have to work with the Legislature to pass any piece of legislation".

The order comes as NY is refusing to comply with the Trump administration's request to hand over voter data as part of an alleged voter fraud investigation.
