Police shoot dead six people in a year

Police shoot dead six people in a year”

Twenty eight people died as a result of police pursuits in the last year, the highest level for eight years.

Fatal police shootings in England and Wales have hit a 12-year high, according to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

IPCC chair, Dame Anne Owers, said that the figures should be "treated with caution", pointing out "the numbers involved are relatively small, and it is not clear whether year on year variations are a spike or a trend".

One of the deaths was terror-related - the shooting of Westminster attacker Khalid Masood outside the Houses of Parliament in March.

"While the number of fatal police shootings has risen this year, this is in the context of many thousands of authorised firearms operations - 14,700 in 2015/16".

"It is important that each incident is thoroughly and independently investigated, to provide public reassurance".

Tim Rogers, who is the PFEW spokesman on police pursuits said while there was no clear reason for the spike in deaths, the reduction in the number of roads policing officers had led to a more risky environment. And a lot of them, according to new figures, were bystanders or passengers.

The report revealed 11 of those who died in or following police custody were known to have a link to alcohol and/or drugs, while eight had mental health issues, as did 40 of the 55 people who died by apparent suicide after release from custody.

The figures were published a day after campaigners held a vigil for Rashan Charles, 20, who died following a police pursuit in east London on Saturday.
