Radio Station Calls Off Event With Richard Dawkins”

KPFA, a radio station based in Berkeley, canceled an upcoming event with English author and prominent atheist Richard Dawkins after concerns were raised about Dawkins' "abusive speech against Muslims", according to a KPFA press release published Monday.

KPFA, a radio station in Berkeley, California, had been due to host an event for Dawkins to speak about his memoir, Brief Candle in the Dark.

He said: "Of course it's censorship.Richard Dawkins was invited to talk about his new book on a radio station that then rescinded the invitation.on the itself offensive grounds that some listeners are offended by what Richard said on a totally extraneous subject".

"The speech we reviewed included assertions during his current book tour that Islam is the "most evil" of world religions, Twitter posts denigrating Muslim scholars as non-scholars and other tweets", the station said.

In a letter to ticket holders, KPFA accused Dawkins of posting "abusive" speech online about Islam, and told its listeners it simply can not endorse hurtful speech or those who spew it. [Emphasis mine]. "I especially admired your habit of always quoting sources", the author noted. "I don't necessarily agree with Richard Dawkins on everything he said, I know him a little.but he's entitled to his views about religion". He is known to target all regions equally, with Christianity and Islam being most at the receiving end of his well-researched criticism.

I am known as a frequent critic of Christianity and have never been de-platformed for that.

Prof Dawkins said he had criticised "vile Islamism" and "the appalling homophobia and misogyny of Islam" but that this was not the same as bigotry against people who follow the faith.

The author of Science in the Soul: Collected Writings of a Passionate Rationalist has criticised many religions, but was told his Tweets about Islam had upset some people.

In an open letter to organisers, Professor Dawkins wrote that he "never used abusive speech against Islam". Why is it fine to criticise Christianity but not Islam?'

"Far from attacking Muslims, I understand-as perhaps you do not-that Muslims themselves are the prime victims of the oppressive cruelties of Islamism, especially Muslim women", he added. "The people who were so interested in seeing Mr. Dawkins are going to miss this unique opportunity to see this leading thinker".

Last year, the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason & Science merged with the Center for Inquiry, and Prof.

"We understand the difference between a people and the beliefs they may hold", said Blumner, "All of us must be free to debate and criticize Ideas, and harmful ideas must be exposed".

Dawkins' cancelation by a Berkeley radio station comes after the University of California, Berkeley has shut down multiple events featuring right-wing speakers, including Milo Yiannopoulos and Ann Coulter.
