Temple Mount crisis: Israel decides to remove metal detectors

Israel's move came in the face of intensive worldwide diplomacy seeking to prevent the dispute over the Haram al- Sharif mosque compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, from sparking wider Palestinian unrest.

The Israeli measures added new tension to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that has lasted for decades, since the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, in the 1967 war.

Israel has denied it has a hidden agenda, portraying the metal detectors as a needed means to prevent attacks.

Several hundred worshippers prayed outside the gates in the streets in the summer heat, as they have done since the metal detectors were installed more than a week ago.

"When that happens we are ready to return to enter the Al-Aqsa mosque to pray to God Almighty".

Israel's security Cabinet has reached no decision about the new security measures at a Jerusalem holy site that have set off a wave of violence.

Early Tuesday, Israel's security Cabinet chose to replace the metal detectors with "advanced technologies", reportedly cameras that can detect hidden objects.

Details of the advanced technologies envisaged were not immediately clear.

The 37-acre walled compound is the third holiest site of Islam, after Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia.

The site is hugely politically sensitive and has been subject to a delicate set of arrangements - commonly referred to as the "status quo" - governing access, security and administration, for the past 50 years.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, meanwhile, on Tuesday urged all Muslims to visit and protect Jerusalem. "It's about who controls the gate of the mosque, which means who controls the mosque".

The crisis erupted last week, after Israel installed metal detectors at the compound following a shooting attack that killed two policemen.

It said the measure would "ensure the security of visitors and worshippers" at the holy site and in Jerusalem's Old City and the police presence would increase in the area until the new security measures were in place. Israeli police said they were investigating the charge.

In a phone call on Monday night, Jordan's King Abdullah and Mr Netanyahu discussed the crisis surrounding the holy site and the incident at the embassy.

Israel had said the metal detectors were necessary for security, while Muslims saw them as an attempt by Israel to seize control of the site.

Egypt, France and Sweden requested the council meeting as US President Donald Trump's envoy Jason Greenblatt was in Israel and Jordan for talks on easing the situation.

"We are not over this crisis yet", Mladenov said today.

Jordanian authorities wanted to question an Israeli security guard who Israel said shot dead a Jordanian who had attacked him with a screwdriver in a residence next to the embassy. A second Jordanian who died was inadvertently killed by the gunfire, Israel said. In his earlier remarks late July 24, Erdo─čan said Israel was heading toward isolation because of measures imposed on the al-Aqsa compound.

Mourners accompanied Mohammed Jawawdeh's coffin from Wihdat city, home to a large Palestinian refugee camp.

The Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif in Jerusalem's Old City is sacred to both Jews and Muslims.

The mosque compound has served as a rallying cry for Palestinians.

Israel's former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni says she fears that Israel is on the verge of a religious battle with the Muslim world. Jews revere it as the location of two Biblical Temples and holiest site in Judaism.
