Firefighters rescue woman trapped in auto by flash flooding in KC area”

The fate of the occupant or occupants of a vehicle that was washed away on a flooded street in south Kansas City was not immediately known early Thursday. We aren't expecting flooding like that, but pockets of heavy rain are possible in the morning.

Creeks in the area swelled from the downpour, including the Indian Creek at State Line - which crested at 27 feet, a new record by almost 2 feet. The auto that was swept away was near that intersection.

Indian Creek was cresting over the road bridges at every intersection, topping 27 feet at its highest. Businesses were also threatened.

Several inches of rain overnight has caused unsafe, metro-wide flash flooding Thursday morning, shutting down several roads and highways.

She was in the water for 20 minutes before crews could get to her.

A section of southbound Interstate 35 between Interstate 635 and 18th Street Expressway was closed because flooding. Some cars stalled out in high water, but others were completely washed away. Ward Parkway was closed in parts of south Kansas City.
