How safe is your water? New database tells you”

1,4-Dioxane, an unregulated compound that contaminates tap water supplies for 8.5 million people in 27 states at levels above those the EPA considers to pose a minimal cancer risk.

Chromium-6 was one of the contaminants found in drinking water in all 50 states, according to the database. In the 79406 zip code of Lubbock, Texas, where the per-capita household income is $2,905, EWG found 12 contaminants above the health limit; in Manalapan, Florida (not coincidentally, not far from Mar-A-Lago), the per-capital income is $143,729, and just two contaminants were detected. "It depends on where you live".

"It's really this unintended effect of the higher amount of garbage going into the system upstream, the higher amount of this disinfection byproduct in the finished drinking water", Andrews said, noting he has seen similar problems in other downriver communities in the country.

Meanwhile, EPA Chief Scott Pruitt met earlier this week in Orangeburg County with developers, utility executives and large-scale farmers to push a Trump administration effort to give the state control of regulations that affect the quality of drinking water for almost 2 million people in SC.

The database from the EWG uses reports filed with the Environmental Protection Agency and state regulators by your local utility between 2010 and 2015 to break down what could be in your drinking water.

If you drink water from the Bangor Water District - researchers found six contaminants, including chloroform, all linked to cancer. Eighty-one percent of all water systems detected chemicals linked to cancer, and 19,000 systems detected lead levels that could be harmful for infants.

To learn about what's in your drinking water, check out the EWG's Tap Water Database. The database, available as of Wednesday morning, allows you to type in a zip code, and instantly pull up the most recently available testing of water from your local water utility.

The EPA is taking public comments before making a final decision.

The GAO determined "that because the EPA has not developed sufficient chemical assessment information...to limit exposure to many chemicals that may pose substantial health risks" this program is in need of "broad based transformation".

"Most Americans just hear that their water meets legal standards. Legal doesn't mean safe", says Leiba. Lunder explained that national and state averages often exceed advisory health guidelines and that even legally permissible levels of contamination can be unsafe.

Asked for comment about the water in East LA, a spokesperson for the California Water Service said the agency is in compliance with regulatory standards.

The safety of the nation's drinking water was thrust back into the headlines in the summer of 2015, when extremely high levels of lead were discovered in the water supply of Flint, Michigan.
