Media withdraw from EY journalism awards”

Fuji Xerox is one of EY's audit clients, and it audited the company for five years while the "accounting irregularities" occurred, Bridgeman said.

One of two independent award judges and the victor of last year's top prize, Rebecca Macfie, said in an interview with NBR that it had been clear from the outset that NBR reporter Karyn Scherer's stories on FujiXerox were a problem for the two EY judges, former managing partner Rob McLeod and the current chairman of EY in New Zealand, Alan Judge.

"They had a conflict of interest, and the way they were resolving it was to make clear the story couldn't be recognised".

The business-focused publisher says the reason the story was disqualified was because it was critical of a client of EY (formerly Ernst & Young).

It has been contacted for comment but neither the managing partner or communications exec are commenting.

The National Business Review has withdrawn from the EY business journalism awards in protest over a disqualified story.

"We applaud all efforts to support great journalism but, just as we report independently, we need to know that any awards we are associated with are free from bias and we have not been able to determine that".

Following NZME's withdrawal, Fairfax has also chose to withdraw from the awards. NBR also tweeted that economic commentator Rod Oram had indicated he was withdrawing.

"With the awards tainted by the disqualification, NBR can not participate further and has made a decision to withdraw from the competition". "It is important that journalism awards are independent and the removal of Karyn Scherer's entry without adequate explanation calls into question the process at this year's EY awards".

"It's a sad outcome because EY's original idea to sponsor the awards was so well-intentioned".

"It is rich of National to claim that New Zealand is 'least corrupt, ' when EY, which does a lot of work for this National-led government, has now turned censor", says the Rt Hon Winston Peters, Leader of New Zealand First and Member of Parliament for Northland.
