Supreme Court notice to BCCI on e-auction of IPL's media rights

Supreme Court notice to BCCI on e-auction of IPL's media rights”

The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over a plea seeking e-auction of media rights for Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.

The auction of IPL media rights for next five years (2018-2013) is scheduled to take place on August and the victor of the auction will be announced on August 18.

Swamy had moved the apex court on 11 July, seeking e-auction of media rights for IPL matches. An answer has been sought from the Indian cricket board within two weeks.

The BCCI had opposed this motion, saying that e-auctions would not be possible. Ltd, which will expire in 2017 with IPL's 10th edition.

Currently, IPL's TV broadcast rights are held by Sony Pictures Networks Pvt.

"There is a requirement of non-discriminatory and transparent method, (in line) with the best worldwide practices, to be adopted for distribution of valuable media rights so as to ensure maximum revenue in the larger national interest", he pleaded.

Singhvi contended the apex court should not interfere into the matter as the process has already been initiated with more than 20 bidders participating in it. In his PIL, Swamy had also written that the amount involved in awarding IPL media rights is to the tune of Rs 30,000 crore and the issue should not be decided in an opaque manner.

Supreme Court will hear the case next on August 22.
