7th World Tiger Day celebrated in India

7th World Tiger Day celebrated in India”

Several steps have been initiated by National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) for tiger conservation and protection including legal, administrative, financial, worldwide cooperation and other miscellaneous steps and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

The Tiger Day is to promote the protection and expansion of the wild tigers habitats and to gain support through awareness for tiger conservation.

29th July was made a decision to be celebrated as Tiger day during the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in 2010.

The designer of the Tiger Island facility, Jamie Durie, said the conservation efforts over the past few years were already having an effect on tiger populations. Moreover, tigers are also kept captive at the zoos and circusesaround the globe. According to a United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) report, this has resulted due to the excessive amount of poaching and trafficking of tigers.

India is home to almost 60 per cent of the tigers in the world. Only 5 (five) of these species remain now.

The budget allocated for tiger conservation was increased from Rs 185 crore to Rs 380 crore in 2017.

At present, India holds over 70 per cent of the world's free ranging tiger population and the global free ranging or the wild tigers are estimated to be around 3,900.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has pointed out that the year 2016 had been catastrophic for the tigers in India as poaching reached an all-time high.

"The royal Bengal tiger is the pride of Bengal too", she added. Besides the street plays, two songs on Tiger conservation were performed by Mr. Sujay Banerjee, an Indian Forest Service officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre and well-known singer, Mr. Abhishek Ray. Till July previous year, there were 2,500 tigers in the country.

"India, like other developing countries, can do more, if finance and technology development and transfer, and capacity building support, are ensured as per the convention and the Paris Agreement", Harsh Vardhan said.

In addition, snares maim or kill any animal that activates them thus dealing a double blow to wild tigers, by trapping the prey base they need to survive and reproduce. This big cat can weigh up to 300 kgs or 700 pounds. And that they need immediate steps of protection. Had she lived a few months more, she would have completed 21 in January.Born in Mysore Zoo in 1998, Swati was brought to Guwahati in 2005, even after giving birth to five cubs there. In Guwahati, the feline gave birth to six cubs, of which Birina - also a tigress is now in the Assam State Zoo.
