Amakhosi victorious in Carling Cup”

As Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates prepare to square off in another Soweto Derby and we take a look at which of the Soweto giants has the historical advantage over the past decade.

The match got off to a flying start and Amakhosi were almost ahead in the seventh minute when Lorenzo Gordinho's header hit the crossbar, before Erick Mathoho's follow-up effort was kept out bravely by Bucs keeper Siyabonga Mpontshane.

Kaizer Chiefs beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 to become the 2017 Carling Black Label Champions.

Parker was setup from the byline after a great run by Gustavo Paez who found the veteran striker with a pinpoint pass.

The entire first half, Pirates did not trouble Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune except for one tame shot by Thamsanqa Gabuza.

Chiefs nearly doubled their lead when the ever-impressive George Maluleka hit the woodwork in the 44th minute with Mpontshane beaten.

With new Pirates signings Thami Sangweni and Musa Nyatama introduced shortly after the restart, the Sea Robbers began to find some more fluency to their play and Khune had to be at his very best to deny Mpho Makola from restoring parity on 65 minutes.

The introduction of fresh legs also helped Pirates in the second half but for all its ball possession, it failed to convert it into goals.

In the second half, Bernard Morrison nearly found an equaliser for Pirates but his attempt was well saved by Itumeleng Khune.

With that said, Chiefs have won five of those 20 league encounters and Pirates have won four.
