Boko Haram Attack On Nigeria Oil Team Killed Over 50”

Boko Haram rebels have published a video showing three kidnapped members of an oil exploration team, after an ambush in northeast Nigeria earlier this week that killed at least 50.

The head of the academic staff union at the University of Maiduguri, Dani Mamman, confirmed they had received four bodies and said two of them were academics.

News of the attack got to Maiduguri late Saturday afternoon as local government officials from the attacked community said they could not mobilise for emergency response due to lack of communication facilities. But constant attacks on energy facilities in its southern Niger Delta oil heartland previous year cut production by more than a third, deepening the recession in Africa's biggest economy.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has been surveying, for more than a year, for what it says could be vast oil reserves in the Lake Chad Basin, where Boko Haram is active.

Boko Haram, which seeks to create an Islamic state in the northeast, has stepped up the frequency of attacks in the last few months. For them to go after NNPC personnel just shows they don't fear any military reprisal.

The move was a change of tactics since the government and military have repeatedly said Boko Haram - which also carries out cross-border attacks in neighbouring Cameroon and Niger - was on the verge of being defeated.

At the time of this report, security agents were yet to confirm the incident. At least 37 members of the team and their rescuers on Wednesday (July 26) were killed when they tried to ambush Boko Haram.

About eight persons, excluding the suicide bombers, died.

The victims claimed they were abducted by the Abu Musab Al-Barnawi faction of the terrorist group.

A suicide bomber has killed 14 people and injured 24 others in an attack believed to be targetted at internally displaced persons in Dikwa, Borno State.

"Yes it is regrettable that two female suicide bombers tried to infiltrate IDP camp in Dikwa, where troops tried to stop them and they refused".

He regretted that the military had misled everybody including the media while abducted alongside other staff of the University, were Dr. Militus Joseph already buried, Dr. Solomon Yusuf, Mr. Yusuf Ibrahim, Alhaji Kolo, Mr. Daniel Birma and Mr. Manaja Uba who has also been buried. "She succeeded in removing her vest and sneaked into town".
