Seebohm makes a splash with first gold

Seebohm makes a splash with first gold”

Emily Seebohm of Australia competes in the women's 100m Backstroke Heats during the 13th FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships at WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, 06 December 2016.

"But if I had won or lost tonight I would have been so proud of my performances and what I have overcome".

There was also a world junior record for Australian Kaylee McKeown who clocked 2:06.76, eclipsing the previous mark of 2:07.19 held by Regan Smith since Friday's semis, the American finishing eighth in Budapest.

It has been a hard 12 months for Seebohm who finished outside the medals in the 100 and 200 back at last year's Olympics in Rio where health matters outside her control conspired to debilitate her both physically and mentally going in to the Games.

"I felt pretty relieved when I touched the wall - honoured and proud".

Bronte Campbell (100m freestyle), Mitch Larkin (100m-200m backstroke) and Seebohm (100m backstroke) had earlier failed to defend their world titles in Hungary.

"It's really good to be here and representing Australia again".

But Seebohm ensured Australia jumped from 12th to seventh on the table by striking gold and boosting their tally to eight medals including five silver.

Seebohm couldn't control her tears as she looked back at how far she had come since her Rio debacle.

"Sometimes you have to go down to go back up".

She later revealed that she had been battling endometriosis, a painful condition where tissue usually found inside the uterus grows outside.

Spurred on by a fanatical crowd, Hosszu looked set to pull off a major boilover when she loomed large in lane one.

"It (a medal) would be an awesome achievement but what I am working on more is getting the best out of myself", Seebohm said.

"That kind of helped me".

Campbell became the third Australian in Budapest to have their title defence sabotaged, while in other events the young men's 4x200m freestyle relay team of Clyde Lewis, Mack Horton, Alex Graham and Jack Cartwright finished fourth in their final.

Seebohm denied that there was pressure to grab an elusive gold but hoped her breakthrough win would inspire Australia on the final day.
