Daniel Ricciardo fastest at Hungary Grand Prix's first practice”

DANIEL Ricciardo topped the timesheets in a heavily-revised Red Bull in first practice for the Hungarian GP to offer encouragement of a three-way fight with Mercedes and Ferrari for supremacy at the Hungaroring.

"My quick lap wasn't as clean as I would have liked so it's partially the auto and partially me but come tomorrow I think we can still get stuck in and challenge the other guys", said Ricciardo.

"To replicate the same pace this morning and this afternoon was great", Ricciardo said. "With the updates we have had here I'm looking forward to tomorrow, the auto is in good shape to race so I think it will be fun and we can move forward." .

"If we can maintain this tomorrow it is a B auto, so today it certainly behaved more like a B. This morning looked strong, out of the box we were the first one on a green track and basically we kept good pace. I genuinely feel we can stay at the pointy end tomorrow".

The Australian, running in an updated Red Bull, finished 0.234s seconds ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, with Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes just over a tenth further back in third.

World championship leader Sebastian Vettel had a hard session, spinning off, complaining of oversteer and at one stage losing a part of his Ferrari auto after riding the kerbs. Fernando Alonso was seventh, fractionally faster than teammate Stoffel Vandoorne.

The opening session in the morning featured one red flagged stoppage and the second session had two with both Pascal Wehrlein of Sauber and luckless Jolyon Palmer of Renault smacking into the barriers.

"We need to move up, but I think we are definitely in it for qualifying". "It's not a very power-sensitive circuit so l think you should see a good fight between three teams".

After looking quick in the early stages of both sessions, Hamilton - who is seeking to secure a record-enlarging sixth win in Hungary, struggled to shine on the super-soft tyres and appeared to face a need for some overnight improvement to become competitive for a record-equalling 68th pole position.
