Hoffman takes lead at RBC Canadian Open despite Garrigus matching course record

Hoffman is looking for his first win since the Valero Texas Open last April. "When you're trying to make cuts, that's when golf is hard".

Countryman Martin Flores was the overnight leader by one stroke but Hoffman erased the deficit thanks to eight birdies in Oakville, Ontario. Robert Garrigus pars a closing par 5 but he shoots a course-record-tying 10-under 62 to rocket 43 spots to a tie for third at 15 under.

Garrigus fired two eagles and six birdies in a round that included two chip-ins to match the lowest score at Glen Abbey set by Leonard Thompson (1981) and matched by Andy Bean (1983), Greg Norman (1986) and John Merrick (2013).

Defending champion Jhonattan Vegas is a shot back (67) and he has company, with Andres Gonzales (66), Tony Finau (66), Sam Saunders (67), Ryan Ruffels (68) and Brandon Hagy (69) also 14 under through 54 holes.

World number one Dustin Johnson appeared poised to take the lead until his second shot on the 11th hole landed in the water, leading to a double-bogey.

Hoffman, who is 17-under overall, said staying aggressive and making birdies was key to winning the tournament, which would be his first victory since his Texas Open win a year ago. "Other than a drive here and there, it was a really good day".

DeLaet, from Weyburn, Sask., shot a 1-over 73 to finish in a tie for 41st at 7 under.
