In Kogi : Death toll in petrol tanker accident rises to 13”

Eyewitnesses said the accident was due to a head-on collision between the bus, coming from Abuja and the tanker coming from the opposite direction.

The accident led to disruption in vehicular movement on the ever-busy Okene -Lokoja -Abuja Road but FRSC officials, police and sympathisers were seen trying to open the road.

Most of the victims were occupants of the 18-seater bus believed to be owned by Delta Line.

He said that investigation into the cause of the accident was underway.

According to an eyewitness identified as Bawasa Ibrahim, two tricycle rider popularly called Keke napep were equally burnt in the accident. But unfortunately, the tanker lost balance and it fell on the bus.

No fewer than 25 people lost their lives in the accident. "No fewer than 25 burnt bodies can be seen here".

"Our prayers are with the victims and I pray for the repose of the souls of the departed ones and the fortitude for their families to bear the irreparable loss while I also wish the injured ones quick recovery and return to their normal activities", Melaye said. "What a shame", he said.

He, however, appealed to the government to fix the road, saying that similar accident happened in the same spot where lives were lost recently.

Some houses or shops along the road were nearly razed by the fire but for the quick intervention of people and members of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).

Segun Martins, the sector commander of the FRSC in Kogi, told journalists that three other victims died Friday night - after ten had died earlier in the day.

He however said that he could not confirm the casualty figures until his men were done with their operations.
