'Mahasar' witness in Jisha murder case found hanging

Sabu Mathai, a key witness in the sensational rape and murder of a Dalit woman in Perumbavoor, was found dead at his residence on Saturday. The body was transferred to the Kalamassery Medical College for postmortem examination. Sabu is a bachelor.

Hence, he was taken into custody and subjected to interrogation several times after the incident. Sabu, a neighbour of the victim, had been under the police radar since the murder came to light.

He was named as an accused after the slippers were found from the murder scene. Jisha's family too had raised suspicion about Sabu. The arrest of Ameerul Islam in connection with the case finally ended his ordeal. Sabu was grilled over and over in a span of 15 days by the probe team. However, he was omitted from the trial proceedings by the court. After the Left Democratic Front came to power in May a year ago, a fresh probe was ordered.

The investigation had submitted a 1,500 page chargesheet in the case. Moreover he also had some problems after he was picked up by the police for questioning in last year's murder case.
