Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in hospital for 'routine checkup'”

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was given a check-up at a West Bank hospital on Saturday and his doctors said the results were good.

Previously, Nabil Abu Roudeina, a spokesman for the presidency of palestinian had indicated that it was a " routine examination ".

An unnamed Palestinian official told the Ynet news site that Saturday's checkup was originally scheduled at a hospital in Jordan, but Abbas opted to go for treatment in Ramallah to avoid coordinating security for his departure from the West Bank with Israel.

Wafa later reported: "The president left the Istishari hospital in Ramallah after routine health tests". "President Mahmoud Abbas underwent medical checks, and they show that he is in perfectly good health". Abbas, a heavy smoker, has suffered heart problems in the past and a year ago underwent an emergency cardiac catheterization procedure.

A year ago, Abbas was taken to the hospital with chest pains and suffering exhaustion.

In October 2016, Abbas was hospitalized in Ramallah and underwent a cardiac catheterization procedure.

Mr Abbas has no plans to step down or to designate a successor.

The Palestinian leader has held office since 2005, though his presidential term expired in January 2009. But in 2007 the rival Hamas militant group seized control of the Gaza Strip, and Abbas has remained in power.
