Trump will sign Russian Federation sanctions bill, White House says

Trump will sign Russian Federation sanctions bill, White House says”

The White House has said President Trump plans to sign the legislation approved by the Senate on Thursday to impose new sanctions on Russian Federation for its meddling in the 2016 election.

Russian Federation has already retaliated by ordering cuts to United States diplomatic staff and barring the use of some properties.

The first sanctions were put in place under previous President Barack Obama in the wake of the annexation of Crimea in 2014 by Russian Federation, for violating the territorial integrity of neighboring Ukraine.

Iran and North Korea are being penalised over their ballistic missile tests.

Trump read early drafts of the bill and negotiated regarding critical elements of it.

If Trump chooses to veto it, the bill is expected to garner enough support in both chambers to override his veto and pass it into law.

Republicans and Democrats have pushed for more sanctions partly as a response to conclusions by USA intelligence agencies that the Kremlin interfered in the election. The president denies any collusion between his campaign and Moscow.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement Friday evening that Minister Lavrov told Secretary Tillerson in a phone call earlier that day that Russia's decision was "triggered by a number of hostile steps" the U.S. has recently taken.

The statement said the expulsion of Russian diplomats "clearly violates the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations and generally accepted diplomatic norms".

It was not immediately clear how many diplomats and staff would have to stop working at the main USA embassy in Moscow and other consulates around Russia, but sources quoted by Russian news agencies said "hundreds" of people would be affected.
