Two people killed in stampede at a football match in South Africa”

Two people were killed on Saturday afternoon, and 16 others injured during a stampede at a football match at Johannesburg's FNB stadium, officials confirmed to Anadolu Agency.

The stampede happened at the gates of Johannesburg's FNB Stadium during a pre-season game between rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Fans have also questioned the decision to continue with the match regardless of the fatal stampede.

Some of those injured are in a critical condition. The venue previously hosted the 2010 World Cup final.

The crush happened as spectators attempted to push their way through the gates into the stadium.

Despite the stampede the match was not called off, with Kaizer Chiefs winning 1-0.

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has extended his deepest condolences, saying the city will be working with the police to ensure the cause of this incident is investigated. It has also played an important role in South African politics.

"A football match is supposed to be a place of entertainment".

At least two people are dead and several more injured after a fan crush at South Africa's biggest stadium in Soweto, according to state broadcaster SABC.

Jacques Grobbelaar, the CEO of Stadium Management South Africa, told journalists in the postmatch news conference that all measures had been taken to avoid such an incident.
