Three killed after al Shabaab shoot at passenger bus in Lamu”

Three people have been killed in Kenya's Lamu county after suspected al-Shabab fighters opened fire on a passenger bus, according to an offical.

The Wednesday attack took place on Lamu-Garsen highway and left one other person with a gunshot wound.

The deceased were in a Toyota Rav4 vehicle which was attacked and burnt by the militants, police said.

The bus was on its way from Mombasa to Kipini at about 3.30pm when the incident happened.

Coast regional police boss Larry Kyeng said they had launched a hunt on the attackers.

"There were some who were injured and rushed to Witu Hospital", he said, adding that police have offered escorts in areas close to the Somali border since 28 teachers on a bus to Nairobi had been killed killed. This forced it to stop, as the officers escorting it confronted the attackers.

He said the region had undertaken elaborate security measures to ensure the area remained safe during the festive season when thousands flock to the sandy beaches of the Indian Ocean for holiday.

Al-Shabab has carried out more than 100 attacks inside Kenya, calling it retribution for Kenya deploying troops to Somalia in 2011 to fight the extremists.
