American, Canadian deported ahead of Kenya vote

American, Canadian deported ahead of Kenya vote”

A campaign data company says a Canadian working on the opposition party's campaign was detained in Kenya and is facing deportation.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga lost to Kenyatta in the 2013 elections and challenged the result in the Supreme Court, arguing that electronic transmission of results and biometric identification had been intentionally allowed to fail, opening up room for tampering with the manual transmission.

Travis says Katsouris and Phillips knew there were risks associated with working for the opposition in Kenya, but they thought Odinga's cause was worth it.

Kenya's main opposition coalition says the American and the Canadian were assisting its campaign and that they were detained on Friday.

The United States Embassy in Nairobi has confirmed that two electoral experts from America and Canada who had been hired to help in next week's polls by Opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) have been deported.

A US -based campaign data company confirmed Saturday that its CEO was detained in Kenya and faced deportation after working on the opposition's campaign ahead of Tuesday's tightly contested presidential election, while the opposition accused police of raiding one of its offices.

James Orengo, a senior member of the opposition National Super Alliance, said Saturday that the two foreigners were taken from their homes on Friday.

Kenya's presidential candidates are diving into a final day of campaigning before Tuesday's narrowly contested election as many worry that the vote could turn violent.

"These young men have shown that they are the true enemies of Kenya; (President) Uhuru (Kenyatta) and (Deputy President William) Ruto must leave on the 8th of the 8th (August 8)", he said.

Facebook (FB) has launched a tool this week to assure its Kenyan users can scope out fake news ahead of the country's presidential election that has seen supporters on both sides exchange harsh words online, Reuters reports.

Recent elections have been contested and more than 1,000 people were killed in post-election violence a decade ago.
