Christopher Nolan says he considered making 'Dunkirk' without a script

Christopher Nolan says he considered making 'Dunkirk' without a script”

By all accounts, it's a near silent film. Nolan originally considered shooting his World War II film without a script.

The director revealed in a recent interview with his brother Jonathan (via The Hollywood Reporter) that he first wanted to shoot the war drama without a script, providing a stark contrast to his plot-heavy past films like Interstellar and Inception. Talking to his wife and co-producer, Emma Thomas, he said, "I don't want a script". Because I just want to show it, ' it's nearly like I want to just stage it.

However, Nolan noted the idea of filming without a script didn't last long, saying, "Emma looked at me like I was a bit insane and was like, okay, that's not really gonna work". "And film it", he says. It's one of the reasons he is such a popular director; he marries complex themes and blockbuster entertainment. Most of the movie is propelled by the action and suspense from the Dunkirk evacuation operation unfolding and all the intensity that comes with it. Nolan acknowledged that's intentional, and he went so far to say, "I felt like I'd kind of mastered that form", when speaking about dialogue used to drive the emotional core of a movie.

Given the number of moving parts the movie contains-jumping between multiple perspectives and three different acts during the Allied evacuation of the French coast-Thomas unsurprisingly looked back at her husband like he "was a bit insane", and "was like, okay, that's not really gonna work".

The director ultimately penned the script himself, and it turned out to be one of his shortest at only 76 pages in length; a page of script is generally thought to equal a minute of screen time, although "Dunkirk" rather disproves this old adage given it runs to 106 minutes. However, he did admit that this style won't last forever. "I will be coming back to dialogue", he said.

Dunkirk has made $265.7 million worldwide to date, according to Box Office Mojo.
