City To Sue Trump Administration Over Sanctuary City Threat: Rahm”

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is planning to double down against President Donald Trump's immigration policies by filing a federal lawsuit claiming it's illegal for the federal government to withhold public safety grant money from so-called sanctuary cities.

"We're not going to actually auction off our values as a city", Emanuel said in the interview.

Chicago got roughly $24.5 million from the Justice Department last fiscal year, but the specific funding at odds in Emanuel's suit will be Byrne Justice Assistance Grants, the Tribune reports.

At issue are so-called Byrne grants used in Chicago for police department vehicle, computers in cars and other crime fighting technology.

"We are not going to be between picking our values of who we are as a welcoming city, and strengthening our police department", Emanuel told WLS-AM in an interview to be broadcast Sunday, The Chicago Tribune reports.

Sessions this week announced letters were sent to four cities struggling with gun violence, telling them they would not be eligible for a program that provides money to combat drug trafficking and gang crime unless they follow through on his suggestions. In a recent piece, Slate's Mark Joseph Stern deemed Sessions' latest stand against sanctuary cities "probably illegal". The cities were Baltimore, Albuquerque, and Stockton and San Bernardino in California.

Regulations also bar local police from allowing ICE agents to use their jails for interviews or investigations, the Tribune reports.

Chicago law prohibits police from providing Immigration and Customs officials access to people in police custody, unless they are wanted on a criminal warrant or have serious criminal convictions.

The city plans to go to court over the issue on Monday, contesting Sessions' power to withhold the grant.

As Emanuel considers whether to run for a third term as mayor, he has repeatedly touted Chicago as a city of immigrants and said he was determined to protect them from attacks by Trump, who vowed during the campaign to deport all undocumented immigrants.

The Justice Department declined to comment on Emanuel's comments Friday, the Tribune reports.
