Mo Farah Wins 10000m Gold Medal at IAAF World Championships

Mo Farah Wins 10000m Gold Medal at IAAF World Championships”

Still things became tense in the final lap as Tanui came in contact Farah.

He was clipped and very almost fell with 300m to run - did he briefly levitate?

The four-time Olympic champion won a thrilling fast-paced race at the London Stadium on Friday to clinch his first victory of his double bid as he prepares to quit the track this month.

Just like that Farah had them all snapped - like putting scissors to a piece of thread.

The crowd were screaming him on and a couple of heat-stopping trips by way of Tanui's flailing feet, and Farah had to kick for the hardest fought win, and a sixth World Championship Gold medal in his career - 26:49.51. I work on everything and it's been a long journey.

Indeed his opponents look him in the eye and truly believe they could beat him? "It was a good chance for Mo Farah as he had the huge crowds cheering him on", said Tanui, the Olympic silver medalist over the distance.

Reflecting on the 10,000m, Farah reckoned he had never experienced a race as hard as the one on Friday, when he faced the biggest test of his six-year unbeaten streak in the championships from the concerted efforts of his Kenyan, Ugandan and Ethiopian rivals. Is that all you got?

Having been pipped at the line by the unknown Ethiopian Ibrahim Jeilan in the 10,000m days earlier, Farah upgraded his silver to gold over the shorter distance, holding off a late charge from American Bernard Lagat.

Farah, who is moving up to the marathon, has now won 10 global titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 stretching back to the 2011 World Championships, when he was beaten in the longer race but won the 5,000. One thing is certain: Farah's opponents will need to change their tactics from recent years and not leave it until the final lap.

Farah shrugged off continued doping allegations to mount a second defence of the 10,000m in London after victories in Moscow in 2013 and Beijing two years ago. He tried one last surge, but ended up sixth.

"To have my family on the track is very special". Mo Ahmed went into the 10,000m as the only athlete to wear the Team Canada uniform.

Elsewhere on the opening night's programme Usain Bolt qualified unimpressively for the semi-finals of the Men's 100 metres, winning his round 1 heat in 10.07 seconds, as his fellow Jamaican Julian Forte qualified from heat 3 with the only sub-10 seconds of the round.

"Yeah, I definitely agree with them, they know what they're doing", he said, after being told commentators Steve Cram and Brendan Foster said it was his greatest performance. Justin Gatlin was booed when his name was announced before his race and was again jeered loudly on winning heat 5 to qualify 5th fastest overall in 10.05 secs.
