Russia may impose counter-measures on US after new sanctions: foreign ministry”

Amid the worst diplomatic rift since the 1970s and 1980s, Russian Federation has urged the USA to show "real political will" to fix ties.

The development comes after Russian President Vladimir V. Putin announced on Sunday that 755 American diplomats would be expelled from Moscow by September 1.

Yesterday brought another low point between the United States and Russian Federation, as Vladimir Putin elaborated on his demand that the USA reduce its staff in Russian Federation by hundreds of personnel.

"We have many times talked about the complete absurdity and lack of basis for so-called Russiagate", Peskov said.

Asked about the potential for additional sanctions against Washington, Putin described the reduction in diplomatic staff as "painful" and said he now opposes further measures.

Other experts say the vital work of the USA embassy in Moscow will continue despite the massive cuts.

Russian Federation last week ordered Washington to cut 755 of its 1,200 embassy and consular staff and said it was seizing two diplomatic properties, after USA lawmakers backed a new round of economic sanctions on Moscow.

In practice, however, there is a big difference between failing to cooperate and pursuing energetic resistance to the U.S. It is the difference between refusing to pressure eastern Ukrainian rebels to give in to Kiev and directly invading and seizing a large portion of Ukraine. Ryabkov and the Kremlin said no one had obstructed United States employees trying to access the property. 'I thought it was the time to show that we're not going to leave it without an answer'.

Thus, the relations are indeed complicated, with no sign of abating as the USA has made it repeatedly clear that any improvement is contingent on Russian Federation making concessions in her current stance on Ukraine, Georgia and elsewhere.

Pence said that while Trump remains "open to a better relationship" with Russian Federation, he warned that "the United States rejects any attempt to use force, threats, intimidation or malign influence in the Baltic States or against any of our treaty allies".

The U.S. Congress voted last week by overwhelming margins for sanctions to punish the Russian government over interference in the 2016 presidential election, annexation of Crimea and other perceived violations of global norms. US congressional panels and a special counsel are investigating. "I think the president accepts that".

A "totally unwarranted, disproportionate move by the Kremlin", Andrew Weiss, a former top Russian Federation expert on the National Security Council and now vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said on Twitter.

Today, I signed into law the "Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act", which enacts new sanctions on Iran, North Korea, and Russian Federation. McFaul said on Twitter.

The diplomatic tit-for-tat started under former U.S. President Barack Obama. Russia's economy has already felt the effects from sanctions put in place in 2014. Syria is a primary example, when the ceasefire in the south-western part of the country was reached in early July during the meeting of the two presidents in Hamburg.

He was unable to show that the US has fulfilled President Donald Trump's objective of a new, more cooperative relationship between the former Cold War foes, noting only modest efforts in Syria as a sign the nations share some common goals.

One local Russian employee at the embassy, who declined to be named when speaking to the media, said staff were still in the dark about their future employment. Indeed, while many have come to agree with the view offered by 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, that Russian Federation is America's "number one geopolitical foe", few seem to remember what it truly means to face a powerful enemy state. "My views haven't changed", he said.
