Rescue vessel with migrants refused entry by Malta”

"Negotiation formats in Libya must be reduced to one, the United Nations needs to take the leadership", Alfano said during a joint press conference with the United Nations special envoy for the country, Ghassan Salame', at the foreign ministry in Rome.

"Up until today there have been too many deals, too many negotiators and zero results".

"Political instability in Libya is not a second-tier match, it is an absolute priority", stressed the minister.

Libya has remained dogged by turmoil since mid-2011, when a bloody popular uprising ended with the ouster and death of longtime strongman Muammar Gaddafi. "So it would be unrealistic for the United Nations special envoy to ignore such a force in that part of the country", said Salame, a former Lebanese Culture Minister.

The two ships are part of a naval mission tasked by Italy's parliament to help the Libyan coastguard's fight against human traffickers, whose activities have led to a surge in the number of migrants and refugees making the risky sea voyage to Europe from North Africa. "I know there were rows in Libya, but I think that cooperation and transparency between Italy and Libya is the most constructive way (to get results)", Salame' told a press conference with Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano after a meeting in Rome.

The Spokesman of the Libyan Navy Ayoub Qassim said Sunday the Italian vessel, Comandante Borsini, left Tripoli Naval Base after five days of a working visit that saw Italian experts and technicians conducting a closeup assessment of the needs of Libya's naval vessels.

"An Italian service vessel will arrive Tuesday in Tripoli Naval Base to kick off the service work".

In widespread social media posts, Libyans also protested the naval mission in a reflection of broader anger in Libya over the intervention of Italy, a former colonial power that ruled the oil-rich North African country for the first half of the 20th century.
