Café charges male customers 'man tax' to reflect gender pay gap

Café charges male customers 'man tax' to reflect gender pay gap”

The chalkboard reads: "House Rules, Rule #1: women have priority seating".

The pay differential of 17.7% for men and women in Australia is similar to that in the United Kingdom, which now stands at 18.1%.

Handsome Her is a vegan cafe in Melbourne, run by Alexandra O'Brien, and it has caused a great deal of debate on social media over the last few days.

'I like that it is making men stop and question their privilege a little bit'.

The image has since been posted to Twitter and received mixed comments, with some users calling it discrimination.

Ms O'Brien didn't agree though and said men who visited her eatery had actually been positive about the rules.

"There's been nothing but positivity from everyone, males and females", she says.

Handsome Her has collected hundreds of dollars for Elizabeth Morgan House Aboriginal Women's Service and the owners said they are proud of their employees for handling the increased attention.

In 2016, full-time working men in Australia earn an average 17.7 percent more than women, a government report found.

A vegan cafe in Australia implemented an 18 percent "gender tax" for male customers to reflect the nation's gender pay gap.

"We are not imposing the surcharge, it's voluntary", O'Brien emphasises.

CNBC has pointed out that if a cafe were to introduce a gender tax in the States, it would be even higher, at 20% - that is the year-round full time pay gap between genders.

"If men don't want to pay it, we're not going to kick them out the door". Students at the University of Queensland provided discounts to women at a bake sale a year ago during Feminist Week. The money raised will then be donated to female-focused charities.

Despite the serious issues being discussed O'Brien sees the initiative at Handsome Her as essentially light-hearted.

She added: "It is a bit more tongue in cheek".

The tax is to be introduced for one week each month, and isn't compulsory but just encouraged (so any outraged men out there can pipe right down).
