Jean-Claude Juncker's chartered jet junket cost taxpayers €27000

Jean-Claude Juncker's chartered jet junket cost taxpayers €27000”

Documents detailing expenses of the European Union commissioners were released after a battle with the transparency campaign group Access Info.

Documents released after a lengthy battle with campaign group Access Info revealed that 27 commissioners, not including Britain's, spent almost £453,000 in two months past year.

The documents published Tuesday by Belgian magazine Knack, which supports the NGO in its years-long battle with European Union bureaucrats, show that in the course of two months the European Union commissioners spent nearly half a million euro (€492,249) on travel-related costs.

Foreign affairs boss Federica Mogherini took a chartered flight to the South Caucasus region - as it emerged Brussels commissioners spent half a million of pounds on travel in just two months at the expense of taxpayers. It cost €77,118 for her and aides to travel by "air taxi" to summits in Azerbaijan and Armenia between 29 February and 2 March 2016.

Juncker also opted to lease a charter plane for himself and an accompanying delegation of eight people flying to Rome last February to meet with senior Italian officials.

The documents show that jet-setting European Commissioners racked up a £452,770 (500 euros) bill in travel expenses in just two months. The visit, that lasted for only a day, cost Euro taxpayers a whopping €26,351.

Commission deputy chief spokeswoman Mina Andreeva said "no viable commercial plane" was available.

The shocking revelations were made public after a legal fight with human rights group Access Info. Mr Juncker took a nine-person delegation on an air taxi to Rome in February a year ago at a cost of €26,351 - described by former Ukip leader Nigel Farage as "outrageous".

Ms Andreeva also said officials use their time on air taxis to read documents and carry out other work.

"I suppose these junket expenses are all part of the make-believe 'Brexit bill" which these commissioners have plucked out of thin air and trying to extort from our Government'.

The European Commission ahs defended its spending by holding that it was done within EU rules.
