Mehbooba Likely To Call On PM Modi — Kashmir On Edge”

Sources in Mehbooba's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said striking down Article 35A will be "a catastrophe for all mainstream political parties in Kashmir".

He warned that any attempt to change J&K's special status would lead to serious ramifications in the State.

Article 35-A offers special privileges to the state subject of Jammu and Kashmir in matters related to employment, acquisition of immovable property, settlements and scholarships in relation to Article 370 of Indian Constitution.

Three senior separatist leaders, Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, who spearheaded over five-month long unrest in the Valley a year ago after the killing of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, have called for shutdown in Kashmir on August 12 against the moves to abrogate Article 35-A.

The former CM and NC President Farooq Abdullah advised her to consult all the opposition leaders to discuss the fall-out of the such decision.

According to local news agencies in Srinagar, Mufti is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other political leaders to discuss the political fallout of abrogation of Article 35A.

Farooq reportedly had suggested Mehbooba to take entire opposition into confidence.

"The political parties of the State including PDP were creating issue out of nothing".

The meeting was attended by CPI (M) state secretary M Y Tarigami, PDF Chairman Hakeem Yaseen and DPN president Ghulam Hassan Mir, who unanimously advocated the formation of a group of intellectuals and civil society members from the Valley and Ladakh.

The events surrounding J&K's special status assumed hues of controversy last month in the apex court when the Centre, instead of filing its reply, called for a "larger debate" on a litigation filed by a little-known NGO in 2014 which calls for scrapping the Article 35 A.

The leaders emphasized that all parties should rise above their parties and partisan politics and get together in one voice against tinkering or weakening the article.

When asked what was BJP's stand on Article 35-A, Khanna said, "Once the Supreme Court announces its verdict, we would make our stand clear".

Mehbooba is keen to build consensus against scrapping the Constitutional provision, which empowers the Jammu and Kashmir legislature to define the state's "permanent residents" and their special rights and privileges, they said.

Tarigami said, the Chief Minister also expressed her concerns about the removal of the article and said that her government is making all its efforts at all levels to contest the petition in the Supreme Court. "She wants to govern with the BJP & oppose their politics with us", the party's working president, Omar Abdullah, said in a tweet.
