Ravindra Jadeja attributes top all-rounder Test ranking to MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli

Ravindra Jadeja attributes top all-rounder Test ranking to MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli”

Ravindra Jadeja, who recently achieved the number one spot in the ICC Test Rankings for all-rounders for the first time in his career, has expressed his gratitude towards former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and incumbent Virat Kohli for shaping his career.

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel has been named as replacement for Jadeja after the all-rounder was suspended from the third Test against Sri Lanka. The significant gainer is Ajinkya Rahane (776 points), who has climbed five places to sixth in the list. India on Sunday defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 53 runs in the second Test to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Jadeja also gained nine places to take 51st rank among batsmen while India's wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha has attained a career-best 44th position after moving up four places.

The 39-year-old spinner, Sri Lanka's number one and the world number three in Tests behind India's Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, is out with a back injury, chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya said.

In spite of being adjudged Man of the Match for his fine show in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, Jadeja ended the Test on a bad note as he was handed a one-match ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after accumulating six demerit points in a 24-month period.

Pacers Mohammad Shami (20th) and Umesh Yadav (22nd) have also made notable gains. It means India have already retained the series that they won here 2-1 in 2015, and now have a chance to complete an overseas whitewash.

While Jadeja got his first opportunities to play Test cricket in the MS Dhoni era, it was under Kohli that he has flourished over the last two years.

From a stable 108/0, South Africa sniffed defeat when the scoreboard read 197/4, with India having 75 overs to take the remaining wickets.
