$1 billion grant approved for Mugabe University in Zimbabwe

$1 billion grant approved for Mugabe University in Zimbabwe”

Zimbabwe veteran leader Robert Mugabe and his cabinet on Wednesday, approved plans to build a $1 billion high-tech university named after him in Mashonaland Central Province in the Southern African nation.

Jonathan Moyo, Higher and Tertiary Education Minister, said the Robert Gabriel Mugabe University would focus on science and technology and have an institute focusing on research and "transformative and revolutionary leadership".

Still connected to that, it is believed that $1 billion is the total amount of money circulating in the country at the moment and can you imagine all the currency in the country being taken to fund one university.

Economic output has halved since 2000.

Despite this, the cabinet has agreed to spend $800m building the new university in Mazowe, 35km (20 miles) outside the capital Harare.

"The Robert Gabriel Mugabe University will be an institution created to facilitate the discovery of scientific, technological and engineering solutions to improve the quality of life of our country and humanity".

He would not be drawn on where the funds were coming from.

The latter group is also thought to have the backing of president Mugabe who will seek another five-year term in office next year.

The main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), criticizing the plan, said Mugabe's government should instead improve existing underfunded universities around the country. "It is meant to stroke Mugabe's ego because we know this government is broke".

One of the critics, George Makoni, deputy chairperson of Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition, said it is "clear that the Mugabes want to boost their wealth by setting up this project".

According to state media, Mr Mugabe has seven earned degrees and 11 honorary degrees.

Zimbabwe recently had the highest literacy rate in Africa, at 90% of the population.

"We are looking forward to working with the Robert Gabriel Mugabe Foundation and the University of Zimbabwe to establish the university".
