The fire broke out Friday inside 451 Kingston Ave. unit B18 around 10 p.m.

A 49-year-old woman suffered burns on her hands and was taken to Cornell University Hospital for treatment, according to the NYPD.

One resident, Gary Lawson, 73, said with the person who died - whose name has not been released pending family notification - for years. "I thought he had left already", said Lawson.

"We had noticed that there was smoke coming out, by the time we went to the door there was smoke", said Shatoya Killings.

Police say that Smith was emotionally disturbed and has set fires in the past, CBS2's Reena Roy reported.

A medical examiner will determine Smith's exact cause of death.
