Amazon Considering Ready-To-Eat Meal Delivery That Doesn't Require Refrigeration”

Amazon.com (AMZN) is exploring the use of cutting edge food technology first developed for the US military to ship prepared meals without refrigeration as it continues its market disrupting move into the grocery business, Reuters reported.

Amazon is looking at using tech originally designed for the military to create meals that are ready for consumption that don't require any refrigeration. They would be made with microwave-assisted thermal sterilization (MATS) technology, an innovation developed by Washington State University researchers and brought to market by 915 Labs, a startup in Denver.

The MATS method involves putting food that is sealed in package into pressurized water then heating them several minutes with microwaves, said 915 Labs.

Dishes such as beef stew and a vegetable frittata could begin shipping to customers as early as next year via the Seattle-based company's AmazonFresh service, the news outlet said.

The packages of food can also sit for a year on the shelf, which would be suitable for the storage and delivery service of Amazon.

This technology move, if it comes to fruition, will see a major move from Amazon as it aims to capitalise on the growing trend for consumers' desires for quick and easy meal options at home. This would help make them much easier to manage from an inventory and logistics standpoint, since warehousing and transportation needs would be far less complex, Reuters reports.
