Amazon Inks Deal With 'Walking Dead' creator Robert Kirkman

Amazon Inks Deal With 'Walking Dead' creator Robert Kirkman”

Amazon has closed an overall deal with Kirkman and a first-look deal with Kirkman's Skybound Entertainment, which he co-founded by longtime collaborator David Alpert. The series returns for its eighth season in October and has spawned a spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead, with Kirkman also exec producing Talking Dead and a few other comic book-themed docuseries.

Kirkman is nearly alone among comics creators for having firmly established himself as as a showrunner with all of his Skybound projects.

It was announced Friday morning that Kirkman was taking Skybound Entertainment over to Amazon to develop genre projects, according to the press release.

The Walking Dead has been a big money-making success at AMC, pulling in an impressive amount of viewers for the network.

"Robert is a gifted storyteller who shares our passion for elevated genre storytelling that pushes boundaries", Tal Yguado said. "Together, we plan to explore immersive worlds and bold ideas for Prime Video", said Sharon Tal Yguado, Head of Event Series, Amazon Studios.

Kirkman points out that Amazon has the kind of forward thinking he's looking for in such a deal. Kirkman's billion-dollar "The Walking Dead" franchise is the number one scripted drama in the key advertising demographic of adults ages 18 to 49. This, in turn, should help Kirkman's marriage to Amazon run a little smoother than it might have otherwise. None have had the seismic impact of The Walking Dead though. The project will be written, directed and produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for Universal Pictures. Additional Kirkman comics include Super Dinosaur, Battle Pope, Astounding Wolf-Man, and Thief of Thieves. How Will This Affect "The Walking Dead"?

Earlier this week, Netflix revealed their acquisition of Mark Millar's Millarworld and Disney's announcement that they'll be pulling their content off Netflix for a new wholly-owned House of Mouse streaming platform, this deal is yet another sign of the shifting sands for the television landscape. Those projects will likely be part of the library of content available to subscribers of Amazon Prime.

This is a massive win for Amazon and streaming in general.

Kirkman will produce the film Invincible, based on his popular comic book.

The move is just the latest high-profile deal targeted for streaming video.
