Guliyev denies Van Niekerk to win historic 200m gold for Turkey

Guliyev denies Van Niekerk to win historic 200m gold for Turkey”

Van Niekerk insisted that's not his mission.

It would have been a tough quiz question before August 10 to name the second-fastest junior ever, but it was Guliyev, who posted 20.04 as a 19-year-old when representing Azerbaijan.

Trinidad and Tobago's Jereem Richards took bronze in the same time as Van Niekerk's.

Van Niekerk, the Olympic 400m champion, was bidding become the first sprinter to win both the 200m and 400m at the World Championships since the American Michael Johnson at Gothenburg in 1995. His best 200 time is 19.84.

Wayde van Niekerk claps his hands in delight after seeing his name in second place on the stadium board.

Richards, a World Indoor bronze medallist in 2012, recorded the best result of his career as he was third. Bolt eventually chose the 100 over the 400 as his second race because the 400 is just that demanding.

Taylor's triumph may not have surprised the bookmakers and he still has Briton Jonathan Edwards' world record to beat despite all those titles.

The 25-year-old was beaten by Turkey's Ramil Guliyev at the London Stadium on Thursday. A victory Thursday would have officially established him as track and field's golden boy.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated the champion on Twitter.

That he's even trying the 200-400 double is impressive. Van Niekerk was slightly ahead coming off the bend, but could not make his fluent stride count as Guliyev stuck with him all the way. "I hope next time we will have medals in the Olympic Games", Guliyev said.

"I definitely deserve way more respect from my competitors".

He was nearly passed by Richards, 23, who took home the first individual medal of his career.

Mitchell-Blake told BBC Sport: "I am glad to come through healthy". Lost years Those lost years when he battled with the sport's officials to allow him to run for Turkey took him off the scene but when he came back he was not exactly tearing up trees.

Makwala, the crowd favourite after his illness travails this week, started strongly but faded to sixth. The British did not seem to appreciate the way he was treated by the IAAF, and admired the spirit he showed on Wednesday night when he ploughed through the rain on his own in 20.20sec to make it through to the semis. "The lactic came", Makwala said.

So, there would be no 200-400 double for anyone in London. "I think it's great for my career and another moment to be grateful for", Van Niekerk said.

Van Niekerk, though, showed clear signs of fatigue in his semi-final last night and did not have enough left in the tank but still won the silver medal. "This is my time now, my generation now", he said.

"It was really a massive roller-coaster for me, this competition".

"I was competing against some of the best athletes in the world, so it didn't bother me that the attention was on them".

"Me and my coach, our whole goal and focus was to get on the podium this year, it's what we've been committed to. I have to work to get to the gold medal".
