Intel set to roll out 100 self-driving cars

Intel set to roll out 100 self-driving cars”

The technology company said Mobileye, now an Intel company, will start building a fleet of Level 4 SAE vehicles for testing in the United States, Israel and Europe. Yesterday, Intel further exposed its plans about self-driving cars and announced that Intel All Set to Launch 100 Self-Driving Cars.

A day after closing the US$15bil (RM64.38bil) deal to buy Mobileye, which specialises in driver-assistance systems, Intel said it will begin rolling out fully autonomous vehicles later this year for testing in Europe, Israel, and the United States. As Intel puts it, "geographic diversity is very important as different regions have very diverse driving styles as well as different road conditions and signage".

It's unclear which cars will be used as test mules, but Intel did say it would be using multiple models from different brands.

More than 15 million vehicles already use Mobileye's technology. Since Intel isn't a auto company, it needs to create self-driving tech that can work in any vehicle rather than being exclusive to one brand or one model.

Intel's acquisition is created to propel the growing initiative for the autonomous driving industry, while also making the company a more well-rounded technology provider that can compete with other industry heavyweights.

"The combination of Intel and Mobileye will allow Mobiley" s leading computer vision expertise to complement Intel's high-performance computing and connectivity expertise to create automated driving solutions from Cloud to vehicle. We want to enable automakers to deliver driverless cars faster while reducing costs; data we collect will save our customers significant costs'.
