Irish Netflix viewers will be unaffected by Disney move

Irish Netflix viewers will be unaffected by Disney move”

Scripps Networks Interactive opted not to renew deals giving its shows to Netflix, while executives at 21st Century Fox and Time Warner have said they'll reduce sales to the streaming service.

The only *good* news is that it's not going to happen for a while, *and* Marvel's TV shows, like Jessica Jones and the upcoming Defenders, will remain on Netflix.

"Of all the content providers, Disney is in the best position".

The continued decline of ESPN viewership has already hurt Disney's cable network revenue to the tune of about three percent under previous year, while their blockbuster movie studios have experience similar troubles, with weaker overall performance. It is at the mercy of future deals but not that announced by Disney in the United States this week.

The House of Mouse announced plans to launch its own branded direct-to-consumer streaming service in 2019.

.

Media companies have responded by keeping more of the TV shows they produce in-house, and creating their own services to compete with Netflix. These are the preserver of separate, future contractual arrangements.

But to understand Iger's moves, it's important to break apart the Moana part of the company's business - its family films - from the Monday Night Football part.

In the meantime, it is "business as usual" for Netflix viewers in Ireland, a spokeswoman said.

At the same time, they said it would end its distribution agreement with Netflix for subscription streaming of new releases starting in 2019, including popular film franchises like "Lion King" and "Frozen". The move could also be seen as a way to maximise revenues on its future portfolio of Star Wars movies and spin-offs. Overall segment operating income fell 10% to $4.0 billion, as the 22% decline at media networks more than offset the 18% improvement at parks and resorts and the 12% growth at consumer products.

A Netflix spokewoman said: "This is the reason why Netflix is developing its own content".

Tuesday's announcement coincided with Disney's boosting its stake in the streaming technology group BAMTech LLC.

Disney is the largest supplier yet to withdraw programming from Netflix, which has morphed from friend of Hollywood to rival in the past few years.

While everybody vies for a piece of growing streaming revenues, Disney's entry into a crowded subscription market, and the cost of technology to support it, could weigh on earnings.

Walt Disney Co's DIS.N shares fell 5 percent on Wednesday to their lowest in eight months as investors doubted whether the world's biggest entertainment company can succeed with its plan to launch its own streaming services rather than rely on Netflix Inc NFLX.O to reach online viewers.

To roll out its streaming services, Disney is taking majority control of BAMTech, the streaming arm of Major League Baseball, for $1.6 billion.
